Assuming that you already have a basic understanding of the SAT essay, let’s discuss what does it take to get a perfect score on SAT essays. The SAT Essay is scored separately from the rest of the SAT, as per the changes that came into effect in March 2016.
How can we push our essay to the next level, from “adequate” to “outstanding?”
We all know that the above question has just one answer- “Practice”. The perfect SAT essay is just like a puzzle that happens to be in written form, it can be mastered, but to do it well and completely every time requires practice with a lot of sample topics. You need to learn the format of an effective essay and how to read a 650-750 word passage within a stipulated time, analyze the devices the author uses to structure her/his argument, and write a full-fledged essay. If you are not familiar with the format, it can pass in a flash if you don’t have a method for attacking it.
A very specific approach is needed in SAT essay writing as it is unlike the essays you’ve been writing for English class in school. The significant goal of your strategy should be to stuff in with as many components as you can within the time given to you. First thing to do before reading the passage is to carefully read the prompt. This will help you to know what the author’s claim is going to be in the article and can help keep you be focused on the argument, rather than getting caught up in reading the passage. When you analyse, do not just identify the devices that the author uses to build their argument, but explain the effect that the use of these devices has on the reader. Make your explanation convincing and cite specific examples to support your claims. It will work.
Identify the central idea of the passage
Jot down the central ideas, the most important details, and how these details relate to the central ideas of the article. Identifying the central ideas in the passage and the details is the key to writing an effective SAT essay. To break down the passage’s argument, you need to be familiar with some of the techniques that are frequently used to build arguments. Hence, memorize the techniques and try to identify the evidences used, reasonings given to develop the ideas, and note down the word choice made to add power to the ideas expressed. Identifying the persuasive devices makes it easier to handle the essay by knowing certain techniques, then scanning the passage.

Maintain a good flow and organize your essay
Stick to the standard structure for an SAT essay, which should have an introduction, two – three body paragraphs and a conclusion. Following the basic four- to five-paragraph essay structure will help you to keep you organized and make it easier for the essay graders to follow your reasoning. To organize your paragraphs, follow the TEEL OR PETAL text structure which is basically opening your paragraph with a topic sentence followed by evidences and supported by valid examples with logical analysis. Finally, draw a link related to the topic discussed and close your paragraphs. One important point to be noted is to connect each paragraph through effective transition words.
Remember that reading the passage, analyzing the argument, planning your essay, writing your essay, and revising are all important components for writing, so break down the time to spend on each of these steps.
